One of the forgotten warriors of the nineteenth century, Lawton was one of the first in the U.S. Army to design and employ counter-insurgency tactics during battle. From his more than 22 major battles in the Civil War, throughout his career with MacKenzie's 4th Cavalry raiders, and during his leadership in the Spanish-American War Lawton was a fierce, fearless, and compassionate military hero of the United States.
