Hydrographers spend a significant amount of time at the side of flowing streams - sometimes placid permanent rivulets from forested areas: other times raging torrents of large ephemeral rivers in full spate swollen from cyclonic rainfall. As an hydrographer Russell's task was to measure the volume of water flowing past. This takes around 2 hours each time a measurement is attempted. He had a lot of time to contemplate some arcane topics while the instruments did their work. These topics ranged from poetry to the mathematics common to placid streams and raging torrents. This book is a record of some of those arcane topics.
