From the early 1900s to the mid-1930s, the father-and-son team of Sam and Elmer Bodurtha ran the Elm Shade Dairy Farm on Silver Street in Agawam, Massachusetts, one of the leading suppliers of dairy products in the area. A graduate of Suffield Academy and avid amateur photographer, Elmer spent much of his free time with camera in hand, capturing life on the farm (and in his little hometown) in the early years of the twentieth century. This volume shares, for the first time in print, more than a hundred of Elmer's stunningly evocative pictures. It also tells the story of Elmer and his Bodurtha ancestors, who have called the town of Agawam home for nearly four centuries. The result is a deep dive into local history and a fascinating look at a quiet, close-knit agrarian community on the verge of modernization.
