Nestled within the rolling hills of Sintra, Portugal, a place that seems to breathe history, I found myself surrounded by echoes of a time long past. Walking its cobbled streets and gazing at its timeless landscapes, I was struck by the names of cities, villages, and landmarks, each carrying whispers of a culture that shaped this land and left an indelible mark on Europe: the Moors.
As a person of Middle Eastern and North African ancestry, I was drawn to uncover the stories behind these names and the legacy of those who came before. Yet, my search for knowledge revealed a startling gap in the available history, a void where the vibrant contributions of the Moors to Portugal, Spain, and beyond should have stood prominently. It was then that I realised this story needed to be told not just for the sake of history, but for the sake of identity, understanding, and justice.
This book is my answer to that calling. With each chapter, I seek to illuminate the incredible impact of the Moors, not merely as conquerors or rulers but as bridge builders, visionaries, and contributors to the shared heritage of humanity. They brought with them knowledge of science, mathematics, art, and architecture; they introduced new crops and agricultural techniques; they fostered an exchange of ideas that reshaped Europe during their time and beyond.
