Governor Southard's Political Discourse at Princeton, 1837

Samuel L. Southard's address to the Whig-Cliosophic Society at Princeton, 1837. New Jersey Governor, and U.S. Senator Southard was a pre-eminent Princetonian, graduating A.B., 1804, A.M., 1807, and receiving an honorary LL.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1832. <p> This address to Princeton's Whig-Cliosophic Society is a superb example of a politician's challenge to young men about to leave college, and make their way in the world with a sure philosophy to guide them, the Princeton philosophy as "the Bible the only infallible rule of faith and practice." Southard notes that a failure at this point will create terrifying politicians, as he states: "The educated rogue or infidel is but the more dangerous man." </p><p> Later he remarks on Biblical Prophecy, true to history, never failing, and in the future serving as the only sure guide to his students of world events yet to come in particular the Middle east: "Israel will be restored, the words of prophecy stand sure."
