Lucky Six

(Ages 12+) Joe Hedrick has been pushed from one foster home to the next until now, when he is taken to live with a woman who already has four other boys under her care. Trying to get along with everyone as best he can, Joe finds his plans for fitting in ruined when a stranger arrives in the middle of the night to stir things up. Soon, the five boys are playing instruments they’ve never heard of and entering into a musical world they never knew existed. As Joe wanders through middle school and struggles into high school, he battles the envy he feels toward Sam, his foster brother, whose prodigy-like talent is difficult to surpass, but soon it becomes clear that Sam is fighting a different sort of battle—a very dangerous one—and Joe’s attempt at a normal life becomes much more complicated.
