As Team Phoenix arrives in Johto, they witness the extent of Darkrai’s influence—Goldenrod City is cursed, its people transformed into Starlies, and a fortress of nightmares looms over Ilex Forest. The journey takes them through Zero Gate in Paldea, where they seek the Genesis Tree, the key to purging the darkness. The climax erupts within Darkrai’s castle, where Schaun confronts a twisted version of himself—Nightmare Raptor—created to break his resolve. Overcoming his fears, he defeats the doppelgänger and faces the true mastermind, N, who reveals his deception: Darkrai was merely a tool, and Team Plasma's ambitions reach far beyond Johto. However, just as peace seems within reach, a final revelation shakes them—Team Plasma’s next target is Paldea.
