Most people like to think that they are inventors. Some of them like to dream about creating or inventing the next product that will solve a problem. Quite a number of people study Science because... More > they want to change the world with a new discovery. Nikola Tesla wanted to improve the quality of life for mankind, so he invented. This book is for the beginner who would like to invent something that will solve a specific problem. The book is also simple for any non scientific person to understand, if this person wants to test the inventing waters. The book also offers references to many websites where a beginner can visit for further information about the process of inventing. The XPRIZE. Two business ideas inside. Tips on online resources. List of open innovation companies. LEGO ideas. Self publish your books. Contact information inside. Copyright permission given inside to make photocopies. Please view this before making copies.< Less

Geologic hazards such as coastal erosion, landslides, seismic loading, etc. constantly threaten public highways. Terrestrial laser scanning surveys enable rapid 3D data acquisition to map and... More > analyze the processes behind these events. Previously, change detection and analysis was conducted back in the office. A new algorithm quickly geo-references scans and detects changes by comparing to baseline models. This algorithm has been integrated with a simple, intuitive GUI. Change detection in the field offers significant advantages to post-processing workflows. First, it allows key observations while still on site. Second, it can improve the efficiency of the survey, allowing areas of minimal change can be surveyed at coarser resolutions and areas of substantial change can be scanned at higher resolutions, reducing processing time and data maintenance. Finally, this method provides immediate validation and quality control, improving data confidence and allowing issues to be resolved on site.< Less

Travel-time variability is a factor in network performance. It measures the time uncertainty for users moving between two nodes in a network. The importance of the time variance depends on the user... More > penalties. In road networks, travelers consider this uncertainty in their route selection. This complex decision is based not only on the attributes, but also on the traveler’s previous experience. Over the past several years, the analysis of these behavioral responses to fluctuations in travel-time variability has become a central topic in transportation research. These are generally based on theoretical approaches using Wardropian equilibrium or empirical formulations using Random Utility Theory. This report focuses on the travel behavior of commuters using Interstate 394 and the choices of commuters crossing the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. Inferences are based on GPS tracking data and surveys. Two distinct approaches are used to analyze the behavioral responses of two distinct sets of subjects.< Less

The Highway Safety Manual (HSM) published by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials in the spring of 2010 includes safety predictive methods which are used to estimate... More > the safety of a transportation facility. However, the safety performance functions (SPFs) were developed for states other than Oregon. Because of differences in crash reporting, driver and animal populations, and weather conditions, officials need calibrated SPFs for Oregon facilities. Predictive methods were developed for rural two-lane roads, rural multilane roads, and urban/suburban arterial roads. In this project SPFs were calibrated for these facility types based on their historic performance in Oregon. The report illustrates methods of site selection, collection of crash and site data, analysis methods, and an evaluation of crash severity distribution methods. Oregon agencies can use calibrated HSM predictive methods to more accurately assess expected facility safety performance for Oregon conditions.< Less
