Orientalist Representations of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution in Elite US Newspaper Editorials: A Critical Discourse Analysis By Ashley Crowson

This study, using critical discourse analysis, attempts to expand upon knowledge of Orientalism in the media, by examining the response of three elite US newspapers, via their editorials, to the 2011... More > Egyptian Revolution. The study outlines evidence that strongly suggests that the media’s representation of Arabs and Muslims, especially since the September 11th attacks, is imbued with the ideology of Orientalism. The study found that the majority of the editorials do express support for the protestors, however, identified through the critical discourse analysis were a number of tempering Orientalist themes. These hemes serve to largely negate support for the revolution and to induce a sense of unease, fear and mistrust surrounding the events. This study argues that while the editorials covering the revolution clearly do not display the kind of overt, aggressive Orientalism observed in previous cases, nonetheless, there exists a kind of subtle, underlying Orientalism that is present throughout.< Less

Mathematical Model for Physical Representation and Conflict Identification And An Approach for Analyzing Applicability and Usability of Gesture Recognition for controlling Virtual Environments By Shabab Naqvi et al.
Hardcover: $22.78

Physical modelling in Virtual Reality is a new and expanding field. In addition to this we take a practical approach to gesture recognition. Emphasis is placed on applicability and usability. In order... More > to discuss practical aspects of gesture recognition, a theoretical 3-D modelling application is examined. Two different gesture recognition systems are introduced, extended and compared in an extensive field-test. These systems both have the characteristics of being computationally simple (fast, little demands on resources) while remaining reliable and extendable. Recognition- and success-rates in the high 90%'s can be achieved. Learning and adaptation to new gestures is automated successfully for both systems. Useful results concerning the choice of gestures, features and other system-relevant variables are obtained. Problems with general view-dependent interaction and modelling-specific vertex-selection are discussed and solutions implemented.< Less

The implications of the change on the structure of farms in the European landscape have been the epicentre... More > from which the research originates. Here particularly with a focus on the spatial and temporal results of different CAP reform options. Therefore the incorporation of Geographic Information System into the applied agent-based model AgriPoliS has been a part of the present study. Furthermore an extensive analysis of the spatial sensitivity of the model has been performed showing the model to be stable in its results. Having presented an opportunity to evaluate the reliability of AgriPoliS the foundation is laid for investigating the effects different CAP-reform options have on the structural development in three European regions. The investigation of the three regions enables at the same time one to see how the same CAP reform options propagate differently within the different European regions.< Less
