Prologue: Blood in the Streets
The streets of Paterson never slept.
Under the dim glow of flickering streetlights, the city whispered secrets only the strong survived to hear. Sirens howled in the distance, weaving their way through the concrete jungle. The night carried the scent of rain and gunpowder, a mix that told a story—one Ciara never imagined she’d be part of.
She wasn’t supposed to be here. Not like this.
A year ago, she was just another girl with big dreams, ready to escape the trenches. College acceptance letter in one hand, a vision board in the other—Ciara had a plan. Open a beauty empire, turn her name into a brand, and never look back.
But fate had different plans.
Her parents had stepped into the wrong place at the wrong time. A simple grocery run had turned into a nightmare when gunfire erupted in broad daylight. Bullets didn’t care who they hit. Neither did the streets. By the time Ciara got to the hospital, her mother and father were already gone, zipped up in body bags before she could say goodbye.
That was the day everything changed.
She had no choice but to stay behind, raising her two brothers and little sister in a world that had already taken too much from her. College became a distant dream. Survival came first.
And then she met Scooter.
He wasn’t just another street nigga—he was a name people feared. His reputation ran deep, tied to the same cartel that ran the blocks her parents were killed on. He was the type of man she should’ve stayed far away from.
But the trenches had a way of pulling you in, drowning you in the life you swore you’d never live.
Now, as she stood on the corner of 16th Avenue with a gun in her hoodie, Ciara realized something.
There were only two ways out of the game: make it out alive or die trying.
And she wasn’t ready to die.
Not yet.
