Russian Folktales are a unique breed with stylisms and language all their own. Despite their uniqueness, these tales continue and expand on many of the central motifs we enjoy from other cultures and traditions. The stylisms of Russian writing are not its flaws, but the substance of its charm. Without transition or development, climactic or sudden tragedy can strike at any moment and within any circumstances. The reader will often find themselves having to reread a passage, certain that they overlooked some critical context, only to find that the abruptness of the death, decapitation, or ascension to Heaven was abrupt by design. By reading these stories, we are teleported to a tenuous time in Russian history when the influx of Orthodox Christianity competed with native paganism for the hearts and minds of its people, an uneasy event of mutual capitulation that manifested itself in their stories and fables.
This edition is fully annotated so that the modern reader can enjoy its lessons and its art and also included an Introduction and essay by Shane Caraway, editor and author at Muninn Publishing.
