About Layla’s Life, My words

I’m a mum to a child who has special educational needs (SEN), including foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). I was a learning support assistant and then an SEN teacher for 19 years, I now work for a charity that supports families whose child or children have died; something very close to my heart, as my younger brother Arvind died in 2009 . I live what some might see as an unconventional life as, as an adult, I still live with my parents and older brother and I have never been married. Since the pandemic started, I have home-educated my child and she has been thriving, I am also writing again. I have two blog pages, one called ‘Just a British Asian girl living her life’ where I write on topics that are in the media that are close to me, such as racism and body image. The other is following on from my book, Layla’s Life, My words, where I talk about Layla’s achievements and how I, as a parent can sometimes get it wrong or how we support Layla when she is dysregulated. It’s gives an insight about hidden disabilities that most may be unaware of. My book aims to raise awareness for both professionals and families who may not have come across the disabilities my daughter has, and for families to know they are not alone. It can be tough, but with love and hope there are beautiful memories waiting to be made.
