Simone Fontanelli - ECHOES OF A BEATLES SONG
For String Octet (2020) - Music score and Parts
Duration: 11min ca.
This work is based on a short fragment taken from a song by J. Lennon and P. McCartney, called That Means A Lot. The few bars considered are not simply a source of material, but a vivid recollection of my own youth, when the songs of the Beatles were such lovely company.
The piece is like a journey back to that lifetime, running through different moments. That song is somehow always present, like an invisible friend, throughout the entire piece, but it cannot be recognized at all. Only some of its elements have been used: some pitches (basically E-flat, since the song is in E-flat major), one rhythm or even the bass line.
Everything seems to arrive from far away, and then little by little recollected. At the end, the short original fragment appears. At first, it is played by the second violin, hesitating with emotion like a moved recitativo. Then, it is clearly quoted by the quartet. Yet this quotation takes only few seconds, like a dream or a memory, and disappears soon after.
In the song, the lyrics corresponding to the fragment are:
A friend says that your love won’t mean a lot And you know that your love is all you’ve got At times things are so fine and at times they’re not But when she says she loves you, that means a lot Can’t you see, yeah, Can’t you see, yeah.
