Sojourner Ahebee’s debut poetry collection, Thirteen Ways To Look At Me, is indeed a celebration for this young writer of 14 years of age. Her poetry boldly rejoices in recognizing Africa’s diversity and its magnificence as well as serving as a vehicle for her to honor her memories of Cote d’Ivoire, her home country, and the breath of experiences she had there as a child.
Thirteen Ways To Look At Me also addresses, from the perspective of a teen poet, societal challenges such as the unconscionable homicide rate that disproportionately affects Ms. Ahebee’s male peers of color. A self-described activist poet, her poetry seeks to invite her audience to see the humanity of vulnerable people like undocumented workers and homeless war veterans.
