In Issue 5 of Special Projects, OCC Royal Oak students have selected the theme of Movement to work on for the semester. Movement is revealed–or concealed–with time. Photography captures time. As John Szarkowski wrote, “a discreet parcel of time.” Of all the themes elected so far, this one seems to have the most natural inclination towards photographic technology.

However, the most obvious interpretations aren’t always the best or most interesting. Students are always strongly encouraged to interpret the theme with their concept as creatively as possible, so long as they are able to intelligently discuss their interpretation. The following interpretations of movement explore techniques and/or concepts such as painting with light, the constant motion of children, movement associated with music, and even the absence of movement.
