Intellectual property has traditionally been defined as items protected by copyright, trademarks or patent protections. Nonprofit organizations have a unique conflict in goals to both earn money to support their work and to widely distribute such property in order to reach more audiences and have a broader mission impact. This conflict may be resolved in part by establishing a means for nonprofit organizations to show the value generated by both the decision to earn revenue and the decision to decline potential revenue in favor of broader mission impact.
