We Unite to Serve
The Wartime Diaries of Reverend Stoddard Lane
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
In 1917, Stoddard Lane was a 29-year-old Congregational minister whose wife, Anna, had died the previous fall after giving birth. Lane left his son with family and joined the army. Over the next two years he would see the war close up as his ambulance unit served in support of French infantry at the front lines. While abroad, Lane kept two diaries, copies of which the family donated to the Amherst College archive where Jim Hamilton came across them while researching his book, The Black Cats of Amherst. Having transcribed them as part of that work, he concluded that the diaries deserved broader attention. With the approval of Lane’s descendants, the work moved forward. This book, We Unite to Serve: The Wartime Diaries of Reverend Stoddard Lane, takes its title from a motto that Lane introduced at the Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines, Iowa: “We agree to differ. We resolve to love. We unite to serve.” Lane’s post-war work is highlighted through the inclusion of several of his published pieces. A foreword by Lane’s daughter, Laurie Lane-Reticker, and an introduction by Hamilton provide additional perspective. The book is extensively illustrated with photographs and maps. Each diary page is reproduced in full, with the transcription underneath. Numerous footnotes provide background on French terms, abbreviations, place names, nicknames, and individuals mentioned. A reference section and an index serve as an aid to researchers.
