Goldendale Washington: Historic Downtown District Enhancement Strategies

The Storefront Studio is dedicated to investing the academic capital of the UW Department of Architecture in close partnership with the social capital of local communities. The Storefront Studio’s goal is to strengthen the connections between the members of a community and their physical setting, providing anchors for emergent identities, economic development and social interaction. The Goldendale Washington - Main Streets Enhancement Strategies involved the direct collaboration between the community, the University of Washington Department of Architecture’s Storefront Studio, and the American Planning Association’s (APA) Community Planning Assistance Team (CPAT).1 This exploration embodies a comprehensive notion of how the community can think about effective planning for the future. The Storefront Studio’s specific vision begins with research into existing physical and social assets, and grows to encompass notions for a strategic long-term plan for the entire downtown.
