The Crucifixion of Lucy Reyes
Holy Week Folk Rituals of Sacrifice, Fertility, and Power
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Four five-inch nails soaking in a jar of oil on a table. Tied above the bed, a ten-foot wooden cross full of nail holes. A hammer. A crown. A red toga. These are the instruments of Lucy Reyes’ crucifixion.
A woman crucified? A female Christ?
When National Geographic sent me one hundred rolls of film to photograph the Holy Week crucifixion of Lucy Reyes in the Philippines, I thought I understood the meaning of these rituals celebrated annually throughout the Catholic world. They commemorated Christ’s Passion and death and were celebrated with special fervor in countries colonized by the Spanish. Lucy was the beginning of my transformation.
Over 30 years, the award-winning author and photographer has documented, with full color photographs and explanatory text, Passion rituals of the folk Catholic world. With compelling pre-Christian references, the book recounts her attendance and participation in over 12 rites from Sicily to Spain, the Americas, and the Philippines. Caperna Lloyd’s book is the first to document these seasonal rituals resulting from the Spanish Conquest, showing their connectivity, similarities, and cross-cultural references to pre-colonial antecedents. Honored by the Library of Congress in its collection, the book is an eye-opener for those interested in ethnography, anthropology, and folk religion, as well as for travelers seeking to experience age-old communal rites in danger of disappearance.
