This course is designed to solidify the Latin that students learned over the past three years. It prepares them for upper division university Latin courses, and awards them university credit for passing the AP Latin: Vergil Test. The course is designed to challenge the student and encourage development of independent study habits.
The reading for the course is part of the most widely read and admired texts in the Western canon: Vergil's epic poem Aeneid. To prepare students for the complex language, there will be lectures and quizzes on figures of speech. Words found 24 times or more in the Aeneid, the "General Word List," are essential to reading the text smoothly. Quizzes are given weekly to ensure students are up-to-date on the words. In class work consists of translating passages of Vergil, with students required to prepare up to 80 lines of Latin each week. In addition to analyzing selections of the original text, students also will be required to read the entire Aeneid in English.
