This one-trimester course will provide students with both exposure to European literature and a solid foundation for the interpretation and analysis of plays. Students will read a selection of plays ranging from an ancient Greek tragedy to modern American and European drama and watch a selection of dramas (both live and in film format). The students also read 12 unabridged novels/plays: Middlemarch, “Antigone,” “Death of a Salesman,” “12 Angry Men,” “Dr. Faustus,” “The Tempest,” “Life is a Dream,” “A Doll’s House,” “Emperor Jones,” “The Man of Destiny,” “The Importance of Being Earnest,” “Tartuffe,” and Types of Drama: Plays and Contexts. They will write 1-2 page critiques of each play/novel and also produce a 3-5 page compare-and-contrast paper. In order to further their knowledge of and appreciation for this art form, students will also write a one-act play.
