Lit 1015 H Euro Lit Translations and Adaptations Honors

This course has two main focuses: to familiarize students with canonical works of English literature, and to
foster critical awareness of the issues involved in both reading literature in translation and adapting literary
works to film. Required readings will include Les Miserables, “Cyrano de Bergerac,” Hard Times, Don
Quixote, Pride and Prejudice, A Tale of Two Cities, New Atlantis, Frankenstein, Ethan Frome, The Turn of the
Screw, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Fathers and Sons, Hans Brinker/Silver Skates, The Hounds of
Baskerville, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Man Who Would Be King, Silas Marner, Twenty Thousand
Leagues Under the Sea, Zarafa, and Swiss Family Robinson. The impact of foreign language and literature on
the English language will also be discussed.
