Merit Academy’s Civics in Literature course offers the students selections of classic and contemporary
literature that explore the world of government and politics. The reading list for this trimester is as follows:
Declaration of Independence/ The Constitution/ Bill of Rights, Areopagitica, In the Spirit of Crazy Horse or
Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Catch-22, Animal Farm, The Moon is Down, Lost Horizon or Manufacturing Consent:
The Political Economy of Mass Media, Brave New World, The Political Education of Arnold Brecht or
Communist Manifesto, Snare of the Hunter, Patriot Games, and Crime and Punishment. Also included in
weekly studies are discussions and memorization of important quotations, in-class readings with evaluative
examination of works by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr.,
etc., and viewed documentaries. Students will personally prepare and present speeches, essays, and participate
in political debates.
