Have you ever wondered what Tom Swift, Jr. did before he popped into the world at the age of 18 and with his completed Flying Lab already built? Well, here is the story that started it all. Young Tom is coming up on his ninth birthday and is itching to create his first major invention. World War II is in full swing and he would like to create something that could help the war effort. Armed with a surplus wooden shed and several crates of spare parts supplied by his father, Tom Swift, Sr., Tom sets about designing his first major invention. But, what can an eight-year-old do? Even a very gifted eight-year-old? Well, he IS Tom Swift, after all! This edition also contains the bonus story "That's My Son," about Tom's father and his pride in the capabilities of his young son as Tom joins the Enterprises team when he becomes a teenager.
