This novel begins a few months prior to the start of WWI, where we find a fifteen-
year-old, Elizabeth-Marie Baylor, living in a large London orphanage, passing her
seemingly mundane days in relatively contented bliss, surrounded by the people she
knows and loves.
But Elizabeth's world is rocked when a chance encounter with (and crush on) a boy,
Drew, reveals that her name — and everything she thinks she knows about her roots
— is a carefully concealed lie. Grappling with cares far beyond her years, Elizabeth
(whose real name is, in fact, Holly-Anne Carlton) is prematurely thrust into early
adulthood, even as The Great War unknowingly edges closer...
Four years later, we meet up with Holly again in wartime London. She is now
working as a nurse in a war hospital, having turned her back on Happerson's for
good. Yet the war and her time at the hospital have left their scars and she finds
herself feeling mentally fragile and confused.
While bravely confronting daily horrors
and the shadow of war, a series of events unexpectedly reunites Holly with several
of her old Happerson's friends. Including Drew, who is brought in for treatment.
As love begins to bloom between Holly and Drew, the doubts from her past and their
combined present-day demons, rattle Holly to her core, forcing her to ask herself
whether true love really can conquer all... despite the horrors of war and a scattered
past?
