Tom Mann and Ben Tillett wrote an impassioned response in defence of the New Trades Union Movement after an article on "Trades Unionism: The Old and the New," written by George Shipton, Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Housepainters and Decorators, was published in the June 1890 ‘Murray’s Magazine’. It perfectly encapsulates the struggle of the ‘new’ union movement to take its place at the ‘old school’ movement table.
