Terry Simons is a Pacific Northwest writer through and through. This is a story that takes the reader from his emotionally scarred childhood in a small logging community in Oregon's Willamette Valley, through college and into a stint as a community-organizing activist in New England, with sideline jaunts to San Francisco and Europe. A Marvelous Paranoia is a tough tale told well, with the sort of honesty and courageous humor with which only a true writer can fairly be said to have arrived. For anyone interested in what a real writer faces when he really faces himself, especially a writer who was present during a the 70s and 80s Portland literary scene, this is a most worthwhile read.
