This novel is an episodic, first-person narrative that follows the lives of a group of over-privileged twentysomethings and explores the philosophical implications of their experiences. Its themes include the significance of memory, the persistence of moral feelings in a nihilistic environment, the merits and weaknesses of a materialistic world view and the terrible beauty of hedonism. The sexuality and drug use, and the attitudes toward them, that are a regular element of the lives of the upper middle-class twentysomethings are portrayed objectively and explicitly.
