A narrative of travel in Washington Territory in 1853 and on the Isthmus of Panama in the preceding year. A recounting Theodore Winthrop's Northwest tour. Winthrop was a writer, lawyer, and world traveler. He was one of the first Union officers killed in the American Civil War. In the heat of battle, Major Winthrop leapt onto the trunk of a fallen tree and reportedly yelled, "One more charge boys, and the day is ours." Soon thereafter, he was killed by a musket ball to the heart and became the first casualty of rank for the Northern side in what history regards as the first pitched land battle of the Civil War. Ardent abolitionist Winthrop was shot by a Black Confederate soldier. He died in 1861. His book was copyrighted in 1862 and published in 1863. CONTENTS include: An entrance -- A Klalam grandee -- Whulge -- Owhhigh -- Forests of the Cascades -- "Boston tilicum" -- Tacoma -- Sowee house-Loolowcan -- Via mala -- Treachery -- Kamaiakan -- Lightning and torchlight -- The Dalles-their legend.
