Lectures on the Book of Esther

Thomas M’Crie (1772-1835) was a Scottish preacher in the Secession church, known for his scholarly historical studies such as his Life of John Knox. His preaching was characterised by warm eloquence. These Lectures on the Book of Esther were first published in 1838 shortly after his death. His pastoral concern is evident, with many applications made in the context of practical Christian living. Apart from commentaries on the whole Bible, there is a shortage of sound evangelical commentaries on Esther. M’Crie divides the book into eighteen sections rather than adopting a verse-by-verse approach and this makes it a valuable addition to any library. Pastors and preachers will find stimulation in their thinking through the issues raised in the Book of Esther, but its focus away from purely scholarly or technical discussion makes it an enjoyable read for all classes of believer.
