Three Days in July, 1863 in Gettysburg Pennsylvania:
As one Union officer was shouting orders behind his men, he was shot through one eye and the bullet came out the other. He still stood there giving orders to his men until his death moments after.
On those three days in Gettysburg, a soldier was shot every five seconds.
And on those three days, more American casualties were created in 72 hours in that small farming town in southern Pennsylvania than in eight years of the entire Vietnam War.
Those are some of the stories of the greatest conflict ever fought on American soil. Thousands of men that went to war between the states, knew they would never come home. But those that did, mental illness, disease, and war wounds changed their life for ever.
American leaders pitted brother against brother and friend against friend in Gettysburg but the ultimate outcome was a crushing Union Army victory over Robert E. Lee's Rebel Army and the ultimate demise of the Confederacy.
