The ‘self’ would like to reach some conclusion ABOUT itself. Or so, at least, it THINKS. Autrement vu ... the brain will continue to do what it does, to play its preferred games and chase its preferred quarry, whether existent or not. And ‘I’ will continue to ride along in the privileged position of the ‘thing that thinks it’s thinking’; and meanwhile, perhaps, the brain will continue NOT TO KNOW I’M HERE. Is a shark AWARE of its remora? Perhaps the two situations are just two peas in the same pod.
