Originally written and published in 1930 by Charles Willard Diffin, this old science fiction story is reimagined with the newest characters to join the Public Domain - Mickey and Minnie Mouse, following in the footsteps of the original protagonist, Robert Thorpe.
Mickey and Minnie are sentient, anthropomorphized mice living in a world that was, until recently, dominated by humans. They've been married for years, and are both nonbinary and use neopronouns, and are hoping to woo their shared sweetheart, Vinnie Violinist, another mousean, so they take up a bet with Admiral Pete, hoping to both impress Vinnie, and win money to support their charity.
The bet is simple - sail across the Pacific with just the two of them, and they'll get $25,000 out of it.
But then they come across an abandoned ship, and climb aboard to search for survivors, but find nothing but a few signs of a struggle, and an awful, reeking smell of dead fish that coats the inside of the ship...
This story is around 14,000 words long.
