The Decline and Fall of the NHS? Anthony Chant FRCS Consultant Vascular Surgeon (Rtd) The author is a recently retired Vascular Surgeon and Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons. As a small boy he attended his family doctor on the day the NHS started, attended two medical schools and was in at the start of the Junior Hospital Doctor movement. He helped found a new medical school in Southampton. As a vascular surgeon he was literally at the cutting edge of health care, but saw all of the new ideas that he and his colleagues had developed slowly undermined by state interference. He argues that had the politicians contented themselves with Beveridge’s original insurance idea, the Service would have prospered. Sadly the politicians couldn’t refrain from meddling. The circumstances leading to his resignation are both frightening and scandalous. It is essential reading for any lay person interested in heath care management.
