The 1897 Goldfields season not only highlighted the prowess of teams like Rovers and Hannans but also underscored the growing popularity and competitive nature of Australian rules football in Western Australia's Goldfields. The dedication and skill exhibited by the players during this period laid a strong foundation for the sport's future development in the region.
This publication presents a full account of this historic season. The focus of this research has produced a rich and detailed pictorial record of the season by drawing on a range of available resources to collate and present information and photographs of the Coolgardie and Hannans District Football Associations, the clubs, the matches, the grounds, the teams for each match and the players.
This publication includes an introduction and overview of the season with relevant photographs. Each Association and all clubs are presented with relevant images and a season summary. Team photos are included wherever possible for each club. All match results are included with a newspaper match report. A table for each club details the dates, players, opponents, venues and scores. A personal profile for every player for each club is included. A photograph of every player is included, where it has been identified.
This publication is the third in a series, which covers the Goldfields Football first 11 seasons. This research highlights the trajectory of the development of the major football competition on the Goldfields. This was the era when the Goldfields Football Association became the elite football competition in the Goldfields of West Australia and rivalled the West Australian Football Association for that title for West Australia.
