There is little documented newspaper evidence of the beginnings of football in South Australia, but from that which exists, a number of points about the unique nature of the colonial game clearly emerge.
The development of the game in South Australia was unique because of its geographic isolation, although the connections from its immigrants’ football background and football activity in colonial neighbour Victoria, both contributed to its characteristics.
