Refractions of a Song by Lukas Foss op. 23

ByTroy Wayne

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Energetic, four movement work for percussion ensemble (10 players plus piano/celesta) and trombone quartet. The first movement is an orchestration of Foss' song "Sonnet: Life's Arc". The second is a fast, rhythmicly exciting double canon. The trombones are silent this movement. The third is a quiet, atmospheric, layered piece that uses a bowed vibraphone choir as a backdrop for a bell trio (glockenspiel, vibraphone and celesta) and trombone solo. The fourth movement is a bright, flashy finale - a classically styled variation on the song which includes a chime solo. This piece was first performed April 15, 2004 in Stude Concert Hall, Houston by the Shepherd School Percussion Ensemble and Novus with Brian Vogel conducting.
