Hand-selected by Fr. John Henry Newman to teach the philosophy of history at the fledgling university in Dublin, T.W. Allies applied scholarship, passion, and talent for synthesis and clarity to his task. The first three volumes of Allies lectures, now reformatted and published by St. Irenaeus Press, outline how Christendom developed, from a small, seemingly insignificant band of inspired followers, to wield a force that would undermine and---through its long suffering and blood-witness---overthrow the powers of the heathen world. Allies highlights the revolution and un-precedented changes in philosophy and morals that resulted from carrying out Christ’s commission, witnessing the underlying divine source and strength of the Church. Volume I lectures address the salient developments in understanding and respect for human life itself brought about by Christian thought and practice, with teachings that stood in stark contrast to the total subjection to the Roman state. He describes how the uniform and universal doctrines of the Church brought unity to man’s divided nature; restored a true relation between man and woman in marriage; engendered and fostered a virginal life in priesthood and religious life. Allies shows how each of these developments, derived from the Incarnation, teaching, suffering, death, and Resurrection of Christ---totally foreign to the heathen world and adversarial to its held beliefs and practices---redefined the wholeness and dignity of the human person.
