The historical development of birdsong, Academy, Steel Band, and Social Enterprise from 1987-2017 and its community impact. As a community-based organization rooted in the steelband movement, birdsong has been active in free music education over the last 14 years. birdsong is a nonprofit organization within the community of Tunapuna in Trinidad and Tobago. As confirmed by Jerry Sagar “One of the things about birdsong-we always maintains a common ‘b’- it was never a capital ‘B’ which was symbolic of the grassroots movement, the commonality.”(Sagar) This research is significant because of the historical observations and strategies learned by birdsong. Studying birdsong Academy, Social Enterprise and steel band provides insight for other musical institutions to pattern themselves after and improve their own methods.
