IMAGINE a neglected house in a nice suburb. . . where neighbors never see an owner of over forty years and, detecting an odor, call the police who find no body and have no missing-person reports. Instead, within a filthy interior of rotten food and bedding, a huge quantity of vintage 20th-Century record albums, singles, sheet-music and unidentified acetate master discs are discovered. The only clues are curious etchings in the runouts where grooves end - and the dead-wax begins! Co-author Justin Cipollini, a collector of musical memorabilia and an audiophile, goes on a global search to find the artists, songwriters and engineers behind the thousands of hours in the hoard that fills the house. He finds the few producers still alive including Vincent Mallardi, the former owner of the largest record company represented in the collection. Together, the two connect with a time and state of recording art that is more than a half century past and, today, almost half lost - as they seek to find the man, and his story, who lived in the vinyl house! DEADWAX is the story of the recording industry of the 1960s uncovered in a hoarder's home where the mysterious owner has disappeared and left thousands of disc and tape masters, many unknown. The author obtains the enormous collection, many items covered in mold, and meticulously cleans and catalogues each record, poster, original piece of sheet music and historical photographs from that time period. He tries to contact anyone still alive for context, and finds the original owner of the record company most represented, Vincent Mallardi. In turn, the two men though three generations apart, seek out others who performed, wrote, engineered and produced the items in the collection. One engineer did the John and Alice Coltrane studio jazz masters, and others worked in the emerging rock-and-roll and R&B business. Mallardi, himself, along with the missing homeowner, both sound engineers, produced demos for Neil Diamond and countless other singers and groups. The families of record producers like the late Lou Reda who introduced Chubby Checker, the Twist, the Bounce and the Amazing Kreskin, shared their recollections. And, there are new facts about Alan Freed, Guy Lombardo, Dick Clark, Frank Sinatra, Ed Hurst and hundreds of celebrities and "want-to-be's." The book takes the reader back to the Brill on Broadway, the Old Met Opera house, the building of Lincoln Center and the antics in the nightclub scene of the day.
