A freak collision damages the hull of the sloop Consolation Prize. In danger of sinking, Wilson and his sailing companion, Rebecca, race for the Caribbean island nation of Malenula where they beach successfully on a sandy spot. Loud angry voices nearby make Rebecca fearful of any involvement but too intrigued to heed her warning, Wilson sets off to investigate, witnessing a murder in the course of a drug transfer. When he reports what he has seen to the corrupted local police, he unleashes a flood of terror and pain from which it appears he and Rebecca may never escape. Protected only by the Coast Guard’s knowing their location, the two must bear their ordeal in silence. Inevitably, Wilson is faced with a choice between imminent death or a last minute desperate attempt to turn the tables on his tormentors. His plan, counting on unlikely allies and a great deal of luck, will decide their fate.
