The newspaper was yellow, torn, and faded with age. An article described the struggles of the missionary, Rev. Samuel M. Irvin, to change the ways of the Ioway Indian in the 1800's. It also mentioned James Williams as the superintendant of the Indian Farms. My mother had circled James Williams and written in the margin, "This was your great-grandfather." I was hooked. I had to know more about this man. This book follows James as well as five other direct descendants. I tried to make it as interesting to the reader as possible, even if your name isn't Willams.
