On Seven Ways of Holy Love

Beatrice of Nazareth (1200–1268), Cistercian prioress of Nazareth near Lier, is one of the earliest and most remarkable voices of Middle Dutch mystical literature. Her short treatise On Seven Ways of Holy Love is a concentrated map of minne : holy love as it awakens, purifies, wounds, transforms, frees, and finally draws the soul toward eternity. This little book presents the Middle Dutch text together with English, Dutch, and French translations by Wim van den Dungen. It also includes a short introduction, a compact commentary on each of the seven ways, critical mysticological comments, a note on The Hague manuscript, and a selective bibliography. Beatrice does not offer a system of theology, a collection of visions, or a devotional manual in the ordinary sense. Her treatise describes how Divine love works within the soul. The first way begins with desire awakened by minne itself. The second shows service without reward. The third exposes the impossibility of satisfying holy love by one’s own power.
