On The Road - as a Physician in Nicaragua

In aid of German Doctors et al. - Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the world. The Human Development Index estimates that more than 70% of the rural population lives in poverty or extreme poverty. The reasons for this poor economic situation are manifold. Our work centered on offering general medical services for the impoverished farmers in remote mountain villages of northern Nicaragua. In addition I experienced the touristic potential of that country and despite the incredible poverty I have witnessed, I am glad to know that happiness and contentment are not only dependent on wealth which we believe only too frequently. However, the worry of whether one goes hungry the following day or not has no relation to happiness whatsoever. So far nobody could explain to me why my coffee pluckers have to live in such miserable conditions.
