This is a memoir by a very old Chinese man. The first part starts from his birth in 1946 during the civil war to 1978 when the Cultural Revolution ends. It detailed the sufferings of the author and his father. While young his father had participated in student movements with Lu Ping, the attack target of China’s first wall paper during the Cultural Revolution. His father was labeled as a rightist in 1957. The book also recounts author’s friendship with an American girl, Teresa Buczacki (aka Han Xiu), who had studied in the same middle school with him for three year. It also tells how the author was lucky enough to be admitted into a top university when students from non-red families were deprived of such right. During the Cultural Revolution, his and his girl friend were arrested, escaped and....... Thhe second part recounts how he and his wife were looking for a job after their exoneration. The author was promoted consecutively in three years, becoming the chief of a national media entity. His wife also became a department chair in a prestigious university. After the Tiananmen Square Incident in 1989, they quit their jobs and involved themselves in the early childhood education with great success after many failures. Via this book and another one with his thoughts on China’s society, the author wants to tell the world how the Chinese have survived.
