It's a novel about the life of two friends who worked as press photographers for an illustrated magazine. Beginning in the 1930’s the magazine had written about the Soviet system like a hymn for an illusion of reality. But nothing lasts forever.
The action in the novel takes place at the turn of two twin epochs. The novel's characters are the participants and the observers of the changes. This understanding puts them below the common levels, and they cannot bypass the widespread reality of sex, drugs and crime. “The century of the wolfhound” does not dissolve in the mist of the past, as the timelessness is concentrated. As usual everything equalizes in death.
