When Loves Meets Disney Magic

When Loves Meets Disney Magic

Walt Disney World in Florida has been the most-visited vacation resort in the world, with attendance averaging more than 58 million people every year. The stark contrast today, as this book by Zach Cooley comes out, is that none of us can go there now because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The author and his family visited there shortly before the (very temporary, we hope) closure of the park. He writes about it here in such detail that, even if we can't go there ourselves right now, or if we have but would like to revisit, his words will take you there. But this book is more than a survey of the varied entertainments offered at Disney World.Cooley goes behind the creation of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and all the other characters created by the Disney folks and whose likenesses appear in various parts of the park. We learn how they came to be, who voiced them, what actual people they were based on, how they have changed over the years from comic-book drawings to cartoons to movies to actor interpretations at the park.It is also personal. Although you would not guess it from his accomplishments (besides being a newspaper columnist since 2005 who has never missed a week, he is the author of travel books, children's books, a novel, and biographies covering family members such as his father's law enforcement career to celebrities like singer Dusty Springfield), Zach is confined to a wheelchair because of cerebral palsy. That by itself gave him a unique perspective on accessing the many entertainments at Disney World. So join other readers in this first-person account of a family visit to Disney World and so much of what lies behind its development. It's one you may never forget.
