This is an account of an Anglo-Indian childhood of the 1920s. Zoë Yalland was steeped in the subcontinent like cloth dipped into a vat of indigo. She grew up in Cawnpore, later Kanpur, as did her mother before her and her children after her, in a family that for four generations was woven into the fabric of British India.
