W. B. Yeats, born 1865, was motivated to promote Irish writers, artists and playwrights including John Millington Synge, Sean O'Casey and James Joyce. Yeats prepared his Senate speeches in Thoor Ballylee near Gort, Co Galway from 1919 to 1932. In 1932 he moved, for health reasons, to France. Thomas Francis Meagher, an anti-sectarian orator first flew the Irish tricolour flag in Waterford, 1849 after the1848 Young Ireland rebellion. In 1861 Meagher commanded the Irish Brigade at Antietam and Fredericksburg in 1863.
