Elena Caravela’s first assignment as illustrator of children’s picture books, won two “Moonbeam” awards in 2007 for "The Birds of the Harbor". Also in 2007, The Children’s Book Committee Bank Street College of Education selected  "A Night of Tamales and Roses", her second book as illustrator, for inclusion in The Best Children’s Books of the Year. "Portrait of a Girl and Her Art" is Ms. Caravela’s first non-fiction book for children, as well as her first book as a writer, illustrator and designer. She is extremely proud of all of the girls who made this book a reality.
